- New Strategies for Promoting Well-Being & Addressing Mental Health Issues in Scarsdale SchoolsEducation2022-12-05There has been an upsurge in mental health challenges among adolescents in the United States, prior to and during the covid pandemic period. This disturbing trend has continued post-pandemic. The experiences of Scarsdale’s youth mirror this trend, according to district mental health professionals and Scarsdale Edgemont Family Counseling Service staff who interact with our students. The Scarsdale school district has been proactive in its efforts to address mental heath and well-being issues with a multitude of programs, curriculum-based interventions, and professional development coursework. The objective of this Report of the Forum Education Committee is to provide information on how Scarsdale’s schools can continue to support the well-being and mental health of Scarsdale’s youth, and to propose potential strategies and recommendations to encourage the school district administration to continue its laudatory efforts in addressing mental health challenges facing our school community.

- School Topics SurveyEducation2017-06-29The Scarsdale Forum released today the results from a village wide survey conducted by the Forum’s Education Committee. The purpose of the survey was to solicit Scarsdale residents’ opinions on what topics the Education Committee should research and report upon during 2017-2018. According to Education Committee Co-Chair Mayra Kirkendall-Rodríguez, "the members of the Education Committee really wanted to reach out to as many residents throughout Scarsdale to engage them in determining what our community's education priorities are and to guide our committee in writing research reports relevant to the whole Scarsdale community."

Respondents from all five neighborhoods ranked the 12 topics in order of their priority. - Teacher Compensation Minority ReportEducation2011-02-03We recommend that the School Board reject a target of budget growth equal to inflation and enrollment growth. The Board should educate the public about the possible ramifications of applying such a target in both the short and long term. 2. We endorse the School District222s longstanding strategy of attracting and retaining the strongest teachers available in the region. We recommend that in the next round of collective bargaining over the Scarsdale Teachers Association contract, due to expire in 2013, the Board should bring Scarsdale teacher salaries as closely in line as possible with those of competing districts without undermining Scarsdale222s short or long-term ability to attract and retain the highest quality faculty. 3. We support the School Board222s recent resolution calling on New York State legislators to couple any property tax cap legislation with specific legislative action to contain State-mandated pension fund contributions.
- The Scarsdale Schools Advanced Topics (AT) ProgramEducation2011-02-03WE RECOMMEND that the Scarsdale Union Free School District (the 223District224) administration and the Scarsdale Board of Education (223School Board224) take the following actions: 1. Scarsdale students continue to benefit from taking AP exams. Accordingly, AT students should be reminded about specific benefits they might be forgoing when students opt out of taking the exams. 2. The District should provide the community with readily accessible and annually updated information on various aspects of the AT program. 3. The Visiting Professor Program associated with the AT Program has been advantageous to all High School students. We support Board funding of this program in the proposed budget for 2011-12.
- Teacher Compensation ReportEducation2011-02-03We recommend that our State representatives work to restructure the defined benefit pension system to reduce the size and volatility of the District222s annual contribution through migration to defined contribution plans and increased contributions from participants. We further recommend that the District and the Board of Education lobby aggressively through their state-wide associations for relief from this mandate. 2. We recommend that the percentage of total healthcare costs paid by all District employees be increased. We also urge the District to improve the disclosure of the costs related to post-employment healthcare benefits. 3. We recommend that the School Board reduce the rate of growth in total compensation. The compounding of the steps and lanes, in addition to COLAs, should be reconsidered. 4. We recommend that the School Board keep collective bargaining agreements to 3 years or less to retain financial flexibility for the District.
