Scarsdale High School graduate Jacob M.  Appel, MD, JD, MPhil, MFA, is a
professional bioethicist who contributes frequently to such academic
publications as The Hastings Center Report, The Journal of Medical Ethics, The
Journal of Clinical Ethics, The Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics and The
Bulletin of the History of Medicine.  His commentary on issues related to the
interstices of law, medicine and morality has also been featured in The New York
Times, New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press, and many other
regional newspapers.  He also writes regular bioethics columns for The
Huffington Post and Opposing Views.  Jacob has recently held teaching
appointments at Columbia University, New York University, Pace University and
Brown University, where he was named Teacher of the Year by the undergraduate
student body in 2003.  Jacob is a graduate of Brown University, Harvard Law
School and Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons.  He
practices medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and healthcare law in New York City
and Rhode Island.

Elisabeth Rosenthal is a 1974 graduate of Scarsdale High School. She especially enjoyed her history classes, and credits Werner Feig’s demands forbetter crafted writing as the keys to her successful career as a journalist. As an undergraduate at Stanford University she did exceptionally well in a variety of subjects including the humanities and the sciences. Her enjoyment of chemistry and biology led directly to her decision to attend medical school and she moved back east to get an M.D. from Harvard University. After graduation, Ms. Rosenthal went to work in a local emergency room. At the same time, she was writing thoughtful and well-received articles on a variety of subjects forThe New York Times.

In time, Ms. Rosenthal began to question the logic of having two full time jobs and a family. She resigned from the hospital in 1994, and four years later she was assigned to the China desk by The New York Times. From that perspective she wrote long, detailed and important essays on SARS and AIDS, and was nominated fora Pulitzer Prize.

Now, ten years later, Ms. Rosenthal has returned to her home in New York City. Her new area of interest focuses on global/environmental issues. Now her writing is drawing and educating readers a generation younger than those who learned from her on medicine and China.

With the recent storm that left more than 75% of Scarsdale residents without electrical power for days, and the severe flooding that occurred in April 2007, many people are asking if there is something that we can do better to help mitigate the impact of future disasters. Our two speakers, Dr. Richard Garwin and Jonathan Lewis, present a discussion on what has worked in the past and how we can apply it to Scarsdale.

Dr. Richard Garwin was born in 1928 and earned a B.S. in physics from Case Institute of Technology in 1947, and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago in 1949. He began his work with nuclear weapons technology in 1950 at Los Alamos Laboratory. He joined IBM in 1952 and became an IBM Fellow at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in 1967, where he worked until 1993. He has authored and co-authored numerous books, published more than 500 papers, and has 43 patents in his name. Dr. Garwin has extensive experience in Nuclear arms policy having served on the Commission to Assess the Ballistic Missile Threat to the United States and JASON, an independent group of scientists which advises the US Government on matters of science and technology. He continues to be an influential voice in national security issues today.

Jonathan Lewis is the author of “Spy Capitalism: ITEK and the CIA” and the co-author of “Reflections of a Cold Warrior: From Yalta to the Bay of Pigs” and the past Scarsdale Forum President. In his work on both the history of the CIA and on partnerships between the private sector and the national security establishment, he has explored a variety of themes related to crisis management. He has spoken on intelligence related issues at the JFK School of Government at Harvard and at Yale University. He is a director of the Westchester chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and a Trustee of the American Jewish Historical Society.

Tom Herman wrote for The Wall Street Journal for more than 40 years. He currently teaches an undergraduate seminar “Behind the Headlines: The Press, Business and the Economy” at Yale University and a course on business and financial news coverage at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Herman writes a weekly column “Ask Dow Jones” in The Wall Street Journal Sunday, a personal finance section that appears in approximately 70 newspapers. He is also a columnist for The Fiscal Times, an online news organization.

Mara Liasson is the national political correspondent for National Public Radio. Her reports can be heard on NPR's award winning newsmagazines All Things Considered and Morning Edition. She provides extensive coverage of politics and policy from Washington, DC—focusing on the White House and Congress—and also reports on political trends beyond the Beltway. Years of experience allow her to offer an interesting perspective on the role and responsibilities of the media in today’s society. Alan Schwarz, a reporter for The New York Times, has twice been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for his dozens of high-profile articles that have exposed the epidemic of sports-related concussions. His stories have helped uncover the high rates of dementia among retired National Football League players, unsafe conditions on high school fields, and concussion-related disorders among female youth athletes in soccer and basketball. His 2010 investigation into the dark cave of football helmets led immediately to ongoing investigations by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Federal Trade Commission. A graduate of Scarsdale High School, Schwarz used his Scarsdale math education to unearth one of the biggest sport stories of the decade.

Carol A. O’Connor, Interim Dean and Professor of History at Arkansas State University, earned her doctorate at Yale and has written extensively about Scarsdale’s community planning and innovative school system. O’Connor’s book, A Sort of Utopia: Scarsdale, 1891-1981, is a must for students of Scarsdale’s local history. She returns to Scarsdale to present: Studying Scarsdale: The Pleasures and Pitfalls of Writing about My Hometown

Fredric Paul Smoler is the Adda Bozeman Professor of International Relations at Sarah Lawrence College. A contributing editor to American Heritage Magazinefor nearly a decade, Smoler is a prolific writer. His interests are wide ranging and include such topics as foreign and military policy, immigration, multiculturalism and the lessons of economic history. A graduate of Scarsdale High School, Professor Smoler returns home to engage Scarsdale in a lively discussion.

Glenn Kramon, assistant managing editor for the New York Timessince 2006, spoke on how the newspaper is changing and not changing with the times. Kramon oversees long-term reporting efforts in the newsroom which include the dangers of distracted driving; the safety and environmental hazards of sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks; the overlooked problem of concussions among young athletes; cheating on taxes and the loopholes and inequities in the tax code; environmental devastation in China; and the proliferation of tax and regulatory breaks afforded religious organizations.

In June 2003, Mr. Kramon became the first recipient of the Gerald Loeb/Lawrence Minard award for outstanding work as an editor. He is a graduate of Scarsdale High School.

Clifford Krauss, New York Times national business correspondent covering energy. He covered the State Department and New York City police department before serving as Buenos Aires bureau chief and Toronto bureau chief. Before working at The Times, he worked as a foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal and was the Edward R. Murrow fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He is the author of "Inside Central America: Its People, Politics and History,"(1991). He has published articles in Foreign Affairs, GQ and Wilson Quarterly, along with other publications. A graduate of Scarsdale High School, Krauss returns home to engage Scarsdale for a lively discussion.

Dr. Jonathan Haidt, a Scarsdale native, is the Thomas Cooley Professor of Ethical Leadership at the NYU-Stern School of Business. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992, and spent most of his career (1995-2011) at the University of Virginia. Dr. Haidt’s research examines the intuitive foundations of morality, and how morality varies across cultures–including the cultures of American liberals, conservatives, and libertarians. Dr. Haidt is the author of The Happiness Hypothesis, and of the New York Times bestseller, The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion. In his new position at NYU-Stern, Dr. Haidt is applying his research on moral psychology to business ethics, asking how companies can structure and run themselves in ways that will be resistant to ethical failures.

Suzanne Nossel grew up in Scarsdale, graduated from Scarsdale High School and was one of Eric Rothschild’s prized students.

She is a 2013 recipient of the Distinguished Scarsdale High School Alumni Award.

A human rights advocate and non-profit leader, Suzanne is Executive Director of PEN American Center.

Prior to coming to PEN American Center, Suzanne served as the Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, where she led a strategic reorganization to strengthen Amnesty’s external human rights impact and focus on building the next generation of human rights activists.

She also led successful efforts to secure passage of the Afghan Women and Girls Security Promotion Act of 2012 and convened a historic youth Town Hall with Burmese Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

Nossel also previously served in the Obama administration, where, as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations, she oversaw U.S. engagement in the UN Human Rights Council.

Suzanne is an accomplished author who has published hundreds of blog entries, op ed pieces and numerous scholarly articles.

Suzanne received her A.B. from Harvard College and her J.D. from Harvard Law School.

Suzanne will be speaking on “The New Free Speech.”

Lindsay Gottlieb, a Scarsdale native, is the award-winning Head Coach of the University of California's Women's Basketball team. After her stellar career as an athlete/scholar at Scarsdale High School, Lindsay received her B.A. degree in political science from Brown University in 1999 and her Masters of Philosophy, Education degree from Syracuse University in 2001. In 2013, during her second year as Head Coach of the Golden Bears, Lindsay brought her team to the NCAA Final Four after leading her team to a 17-1 conference record. Lindsay was a finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year Award, and was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year. In 2014, her team made it to the Second Round of the NCAA tournament. Gottlieb is a recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Scarsdale High School Alumni award.

Judy Cheng-Hopkins, a 2013 recipient of the Distinguished Scarsdale High School Alumni award, has just retired from an eminent 36-year long career at the United Nations.  Most recently, Judy served as the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support.  Previously, Judy served as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Before that, Judy was the Director of the UN World Food Programme’s Bureau for Asia and Eastern Europe, where she supervised the UN’s most significant humanitarian operations in North Korea, Afghanistan, and Kosovo.  Judy has just been appointed as the Special Advisor to the Secretary-General for the UN-mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica, where she also serves as Chancellor.  Judy received a Masters degree in International Affairs from Columbia University, and she has diplomas/certificates from Harvard University and the University of Haute Bretagne.
